Leica M8

Zoom

4 March 2009

Talk about a long decision….
I’ve read the numerous reports, listened to a handful of people I class as trustworthy, and in the end decided to borrow one for a few days.
I got this unit from a very close friend and utterly brilliant conflict photographer, Jason P. Howe
I know all about the shortcomings of the M8 but in reality they don’t affect me.
ISO: Yes, it doesn’t have anywhere near the capabilities as the latest Canon/Nikon’s, but I don’t shoot above 800 ISO, EVER!
I just wouldn’t use a feature like that to be honest.
Sensor size: I’m not into that arms race, sorry but I’ve just sold a story to the Sunday Times and they accepted images made on a very old digital camera, with no arguments at all.
I got it as I love the Leica workflow. I love the unit itself, it’s small, unobtrusive and doesn’t make you look like a pap, or Getty photographer :)
Leica glass is the other reason. I’ve used Canon’s L primes, and to be honest they don’t compare. Also the size is a massive issue. A Canon 5d with 85mm prime isn’t small, it’s bloody huge.
Anyway each to their own, I know I’ll still produce amazing images with this unit and no, I will not be ditching the M6, they will serve together. Everyone has different tastes and needs, for me the Leica range suits those needs.
Now back to planning this Burma trip….
