People of Durban: Unknown

Zoom

6 July 2009

She refused to tell me her name, but didn’t mind having her picture taken.

One thing that has become apparent whilst shooting this project is that many women, and white people, refuse to be included.

I’m not sure why exactly, many women state to me they are afraid of their pictures turning up on the Internet or being used in a bad manner.

White people just don’t get why I’m doing this. They feel it’s an invasion of their privacy (even when I only ask permission and respect their wishes).

Black men on the other hand, LOVE having their portrait taken. They pose for me and often enjoy the experience so much, they decide on a better location for the next shot.

It’s been an amazing experience shooting this and look forward to finishing it now.

‘Unknown’ sells peanuts and cold drinks to the truckers inside Durban Container Yard. She has been doing this for 4 years.

‘Unknown’ works on the streets of Durban.
