Umthombo

Zoom

16 September 2010

I’ve started to work with a very cool NGO here in Durban called Umthombo. Umthombo’s aim is to give street kids a chance of living normal lives and not the ones they currently live: drug addiction and constant abuse from the state and public.

The problem South Africa has is that they don’t have any support programs for street kids. In fact anyone who lives on the streets is seen as a pest to society, one of the main factors behind me doing my People of Durban project a few years back.

Umthombo teaches the kids how to surf, gives them lodging and education and helps them be kids. Something I’m fully supportive of and look forward to working with over the next year to document the valuable work they do.
